The subscription economy booms but competition grows PLUS strategies to grow reader revenue in a competitive market
What’s New in Publishing looks at the trends that drove an increase in subscription revenue last year. It increased 13%. But both WNIP and Deloitte looked at how competitive things have become both in terms of attention and revenue. WNIP looks at trends in the solopreneur economy, and Deloitte highlights the competitive landscape in streaming and gaming. While we may not think of those as competitors to news and media, time and attention are the scarce resources.
Journalism.co.uk has a panel discussion with the people driving monetisation strategies at major publishers such as the FT and the Guardian as well as startups, in this case the slow news startup Tortoise (which is a client where I work). It is interesting to see the different positioning of the outlets with some focused on values and quality of content and others focused more on conversion strategies.
