From @risj_oxford and @nicnewman - Publishers look to newsletters for opportunities (but it's not the same opportunity everywhere) PLUS The benefits for media of developing a 'test and learn' culture

It shows how valuable the Digital News Report from the Reuters Institute is that it's still being talked about weeks after its release. Nic Newman and his team are always good at highlighting the latest trends. As @wnip points out, this year's report dedicated an entire chapter to newsletters. It's worth reading. I'll note a couple of things

  • We haven't reached 'peak newsletter'.

  • Newsletter engagement varies by country. They aren't as popular in the UK as they are in the US.

US radio consultant Fred Jacobs, who did some work for my former employer Ideastream Public media, has a podcast-focused true or false quiz. The ones that really jumped out at me:

  • New podcast launches were down 80% this year

  • But podcast revenue (in the US) is way up.

  • Spotify's stock is running in the opposite direction, down 70%.

There's more in the post with an especially interesting nudget about audiences in the UK and Ireland.

The last piece that I'll highlight is again from Piano. They have had some cracking content this week. Publishers that are succeeding the most have "a culture of test and learn", they say. Amen.

And on this gloriously sunny and warm Friday, I'll leave you to browse the rest. See you next week!
