When I was making the shift to product management, I asked Anita Zielana, who is educating the next generation of media leaders, what was the first step for me and for my organisation. She said data. It is the foundation for product thinking and also wider cultural change.
The data landscape is shifting in a major way, with the EU ruling that Google Analytics breaks GDPR, and Google itself transitioning customers to a new platform. known in the industry as GA4. The time to change is now so you can build up a years worth of data before Google sunsets it’s predecessor, recommends Louis-Marie Guérif, the chief data protection officer at subscription management company Piano (which is a great collaborator with Pugpig).
Speaking of Google, they have launched a new version of Google News. MediaPost says it is more personal and more local.
Another piece that caught my eye was a project from NOLA.com for an evergreen pop-up newsletter. The project was part of a fellowship with the Reynolds Institute of Journalism at the University of Missouri, and it not only shows the research that went into the conception of the project - a six instalment newsletter series - but it also went into how it was executed. The piece makes it sound really easy, and now I want to see how Campaign Monitor works with other CMSes like Pugpig’s.
