My friend Damian Radcliffe has the next instalment of his comprehensive overview of the many ways to generate revenue from media. In this edition of the overview, he looks at some emergent ideas but also some pretty well established ideas. From acquiring other businesses in the new wave of consolidation to referral programs and membership, Damian really covers the waterfront when it comes to the breadth of ways that companies are generating revenue.

One thing that has developed as reader revenue has become a larger part of media companies' income mix, some companies have developed a double funnel, with part of the funnel focused on converting readers to known and paying members of the audience and the other part of the funnel being focused on retention. Fandom looked at the major US streaming services to help understand what drives churn. Obviously, there are differences between entertainment and news and information, but the insights can highlight some ways to keep audiences connected to you once you've convinced them to pay.
