Apple and AT&T’s privacy moves cost Meta $10B in one quarter as Zuck’s empire takes a hit PLUS @pressgazette analyses the world’s top news sites’ tech stacks
The big news across media has to be Facebook/Meta’s really bad quarter. Some of the hit was beyond their control with Apple and US telecoms major AT&T rolling out new privacy initiatives that took a big bite out of the social media giant’s advertising revenue. But the other contributor to the poor performance was users deciding to abandon Meta’s platforms. Some of that might be due to bad press, but Meta is also facing stiff competition for attention from TikTok.
The Press Gazette had a couple of excellent pieces on digital publishing strategy today. The first piece covers The Telegraph’s move to combine two mobile apps and how that their efforts helped drive higher subscriptions despite changes at Apple.
The Press Gazette also looked at the content management systems that major news publishers use. WordPress is the big winner with more than 40% of major publishers using the ever-maturing system.
Digiday interviewed Vice’s Cory Haik about the company’s pivot to commerce. They are expecting commerce to contribute to two-thirds of revenue at its digital division by 2024.
