What analytics services are publishers using by @pressgazette PLUS There isn't a one-size-fits-all app strategy says @WNIP

There is a lot of solid actionable market intelligence today covering analytics, advertising, apps and local social strategy.

First up: Last week, the UK's Press Gazette looked at what content managements systems major publishers were using, and this week, they applied the same deep focus on audience analytics. The Duopoly + comScore dominate the top five, which isn't surprising. I was surprised to see realtime services Chartbeat and Parse.ly so far down the league table. It would be interesting to hear why fewer publishers are using those services. I like Chartbeat in particular because its use of engaged time balances engagement with volume elegantly and in a way that editorial managers and staff appreciate and understand.

What's New in Publishing has been doing a great series looking at the mobile app strategies of various publishers, and today, they bring it all together. After years of consulting and now driving digital strategy as a product director, the conclusion of the piece doesn't surprise me: There is no single app solution. An app solution depends on the business model and whether the publisher is focused on niche or scale (or aggregating niches). It's a good summary of the pieces that have come before.

Ben Thompson takes a look at digital advertising in 2022. The rise of Apple and Amazon is starting to get a lot more attention. One thing that media executives and strategists will want to take note of. While digital has sucked billions out of the print ad business, it is now starting to train its black hole on TV and radio. TV is already in a state of flux as big bundle satellite and cable services give way to ala carte D2C streaming services, but I wonder what it bodes for radio, which has been a small but stable part of the media mix over the last decade or two. This is definitely a piece to read and consider for how it affects or could affect your business.

PLUS Facebook takes a pasting in a couple of pieces including one in The Atlantic which says that Meta's crown jewel is dominated by abusive super-users. The LMA talks about social media strategies for local publishers. While I'm almost a curmudgeon when it comes to Web3 2022 edition, I stop and listen when a strategist from Finland's public broadcaster YLE has something to say. I've worked with them and taken part in EBU events with them, and they are always ahead of the curve and thoughtful. While I am skeptical of NFTs, I am not about the potential for AI in newsrooms for a wide range of applications including improving content discovery, supporting efficient editorial workflows, generating commodity content and optimising paid content applications.

The move shows the increasing influence of the crypto industry with the sector's first big investment in a traditional U.S. media property.

Most public activity on the platform comes from a tiny, hyperactive group of abusive users. Facebook relies on them to decide what everyone sees.

Publisher Or Platform? How About Just Being A Responsible Corporate Citizen? - 02/08/2022

In the last several years, I’ve learned a lot about the challenges and opportunities local media face when it comes to social platforms — from keeping readers engaged, to heightening value for their organizations, to ways to do more with less.

In recent years, the number of nonprofits and initiatives that could be categorized under a concept called “bridging” has expanded in the U.S.: Millions of Conversations, The People’s Supper and Good Conflict are just a few. Some efforts build on conflict resolution practices at a large scale (think social psychology) or individual (think marriage counseling), […]
